Catesby Estates promoted a 9.1 acre site in the historic town of Battle. Battle is one of the largest towns in the District and sits wholly within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Therefore some loss of the AONB was required to deliver the necessary housing numbers, an accepted point in the Council’s adopted Core Strategy.
An application was submitted in spring 2017 to Rother District Council, and they resolved to grant outline planning permission for 63 homes in October 2017.
With less than 3.7 years housing land supply and delays to the part 2 Local Plan which allocates housing sites, there were considerable public benefits in delivering housing in a District where the average house price is almost 12 times the average income.
This was recognised by Committee Members, particularly as the scheme delivers 22 policy compliant affordable homes. As the location for the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Battle has an abundance of heritage assets which needed to be considered during the planning application.
The Catesby Estates project team, developed a carefully designed layout which meant the scheme had no heritage impact as agreed by Historic England.
As a result of this careful and high quality design led approach, the scheme was commended by Members of the Planning Committee during the debate. Outline planning permission was granted in December 2017.
The site was sold to Optivo Development Services (ODS) a subsidiary of Optivo, one of the largest housing providers in the UK in May 2018.
All new homes at the Catesby strategic land site now know a Tollgate Green are sold.
